{"id":1427,"date":"2020-05-13T06:47:08","date_gmt":"2020-05-13T13:47:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/?p=1427"},"modified":"2024-03-14T16:55:34","modified_gmt":"2024-03-14T23:55:34","slug":"the-isolation-trip","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/riffelages.ca\/?page_id=1427","title":{"rendered":"2020 BC Mid-Coast &#8220;The Isolation Trip&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20200327-002-HR-Edit-Edit-Edit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20200327-002-HR-Edit-Edit-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200327-002-HR-Edit-Edit-Edit\" title=\"20200327-002-HR-Edit-Edit-Edit\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s early April 2020, and unusual things are happening to our world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are planning to go further than 2 meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20200402-001-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20200402-001-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200402-001-HR-Edit\" title=\"20200402-001-HR-Edit\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This week we went for a short shakedown cruise.&nbsp; We are aiming for a mid-April departure for points north.&nbsp; More than just \u2018socially distant\u2019, we are heading out for a wilderness adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/face-the-world.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/face-the-world_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"face the world\" title=\"face the world\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We are getting prepared.  Janet made some masks in case we need them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Isolation Trip begins.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We have embarked on our planned 3 month summer cruise despite the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp; Rather that practising Social Distancing at home, we are Isolating on our boat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200424-006-HR.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200424-006-HR_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200424-006-HR\" title=\"20200424-006-HR\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Our first stop, at Keats Island in Howe Sound, provided just another reminder for why we are heading out into the wilderness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200429-004-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200429-004-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200429-004-HR-Edit\" title=\"20200429-004-HR-Edit\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These sea lions near Powell River were a welcome sight.&nbsp; Out here life goes on as usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200502-034-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200502-034-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200502-034-HR-Edit\" title=\"20200502-034-HR-Edit\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We headed out in late April during a stretch of wet and windy weather.&nbsp; We had lots of rain and had to sit out a couple of windy days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200429-019-HR.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200429-019-HR_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200429-019-HR\" title=\"20200429-019-HR\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We are pretty self-sufficient on board, with enough food for many weeks.&nbsp; Jan got us off to a good start by making a batch of excellent cinny buns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200501-030-HR.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200501-030-HR_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200501-030-HR\" title=\"20200501-030-HR\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A few days later I baked our first loaf of bread.&nbsp; This is \u2018beer\u2019 bread.&nbsp; Easy to make, like soda bread but with a yeasty flavour from the beer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200429-021-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200429-021-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200429-021-HR-Edit\" title=\"20200429-021-HR-Edit\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the rain, Jan is enjoying a hot shower on the back deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200501-032-HR.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200501-032-HR_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200501-032-HR\" title=\"20200501-032-HR\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Raven Song anchored off the Orford River in Bute Inlet.&nbsp; We stopped here to look for bears.&nbsp; There was a big grizzly in the grass along the river but the bear was shy and wouldn\u2019t let me take his picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200502-048-HR.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200502-048-HR_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200502-048-HR\" title=\"20200502-048-HR\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Native Pictographs (paintings) and Petroglyphs (carvings) are found all up and down the coast.&nbsp; Knight Inlet has steep sides scarred by numerous landslides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200506-021-HR-Edit-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200506-021-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200506-021-HR-Edit\" title=\"20200506-021-HR-Edit\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At Glendale Cove we saw this grizzly grazing along the shore of the estuary.&nbsp; This bear still has its full winter coat.&nbsp; The grizzlies here are easy to photograph as there is a bear viewing resort located in the Cove and the bears are habituated to the presence of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200506-019-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200506-019-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200506-019-HR-Edit\" title=\"20200506-019-HR-Edit\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Just down the shore from the grizzly was this black bear.&nbsp;&nbsp; is a detail of a series of Coppers , located at the head of Kingcome Inlet.&nbsp; Coppers represented wealth, and perhaps this display at the entrance to the village was a proclamation of the wealth of the tribe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200509-009-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200509-009-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200509-009-HR-Edit\" title=\"20200509-009-HR-Edit\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>New pictograph at the head of Kingcome Inlet.&nbsp; This 38 foot tall painting was created by Marianne Nicolson in 1999. The making of this painting, and the legends and history behind it are described eloquently in the book Two Wolves at the Dawn of Time by Judith Williams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200509-006-HR-2-Edit-Edit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200509-006-HR-2-Edit-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We took the dinghy a few miles up the Wakeman River, at the head of Wakeman Inlet.&nbsp; Beautiful scenery, but the fast-flowing river made for an exciting dinghy ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200510-013-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200510-013-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaving the deep inlets and mountains, we moved out to the edge of Queen Charlotte Strait.
