&#8220;Isolating on the coast&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\">Our last stop was in Port McNeill on northern Vancouver Island.&nbsp; While there we had to re-acquaint ourselves with the current Social Distancing practices including Virtual get-togethers.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200513-006-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200513-006-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200513-006-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200513-006-HR-Edit\" width=\"364\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Here we joined our monthly book group meeting online, and enjoyed seeing the faces of some of our friends.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">The next morning we left all this behind and headed off into the wilderness \u2013 which could be defined by those areas without cellphone coverage.&nbsp; It would be a week before we received another cellphone signal.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200514-008-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200514-008-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200514-008-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200514-008-HR-Edit\" width=\"1027\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">The Pultney Point lighthouse on the west end of Malcolm Island just west of Port McNeill.&nbsp; From here we crossed to the north side of Queen Charlotte Strait on a nice calm day.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200514-001-HR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200514-001-HR_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"1028\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">In Blunden Harbour we paddled up to the entrance of a large lagoon to have a look at the tidal rapids.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200515-010-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200515-010-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200515-010-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200515-010-HR-Edit\" width=\"1028\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">A bit further up the coast, we are out exploring the windswept shores of Bramham Island.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200515-004-HR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; This part of the coast is open ocean so we were rocking around in the ocean swells and were exhausted by the end of the day.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200515-001-HR-Edit-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; You can see that it\u2019s been a while since I had a haircut.&nbsp; My excuse is that I\u2019m just trying to blend in with the locals!<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200515-017-HR-Edit-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; Well, on really calm days you can spot rock totems, like this one.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200518-032-HR-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200518-032-HR\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200518-032-HR_thumb-1.jpg\" alt=\"20200518-032-HR\" width=\"581\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">We went up Rivers Inlet to find this pictograph, which is featured in \u201cTwo Wolves at the Dawn of Time\u201d,&nbsp; This is probably the most artistic pictograph we have seen \u2013 a humanoid figure with a \u2018copper\u2019 for a body and a stylized bird (Raven?) head.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200518-067-HR-Edit-2-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200518-067-HR-Edit-2\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200518-067-HR-Edit-2_thumb-1.jpg\" alt=\"20200518-067-HR-Edit-2\" width=\"1027\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">We have explored several river estuaries looking for bears.&nbsp; Most of the time we just had beautiful scenery, but one day we came across several&nbsp; Grizzly bears.&nbsp; When bears come out of hibernation, the first thing they eat is grass.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200518-064-HR-Edit-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200518-064-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200518-064-HR-Edit_thumb-1.jpg\" alt=\"20200518-064-HR-Edit\" width=\"1027\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">This is a happy Grizzly bear in perfect bear territory.&nbsp; Lots of grass to graze in the spring.&nbsp; The blooming crabapple trees behind the bear will provide fruit in the summer and in the fall the river will be full of salmon.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200518-054-HR-Edit-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200518-054-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200518-054-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200518-054-HR-Edit\" width=\"1027\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">When life is this good, sometimes you just have to have a snooze.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200519-032-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200519-032-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"1028\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">We were actually surprised to share this anchorage with a couple of other boats.&nbsp; This is the first time we have shared an anchorage since the first couple of nights of the trip.&nbsp; The green patch on the left covers a midden from a former Native village site.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200520-017-HR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200520-017-HR\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200520-017-HR_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200520-017-HR\" width=\"364\" height=\"364\" border=\"0\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200521-018-HR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200521-018-HR\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200521-018-HR_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200521-018-HR\" width=\"364\" height=\"364\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Another loaf of bread comes out of the oven, and soon after there is avocado toast.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200520-015-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200520-015-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200520-015-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200520-015-HR-Edit\" width=\"1028\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Whenever we get out to the outer islands, we try to get out in the kayaks. We love paddling in the ocean swells and the rugged beauty of the coast.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200520-033-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200520-033-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"1028\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">When we came across this group of sea lions, they were lying close together in the waves, sound asleep.&nbsp; Jan snapped this picture after they woke up.&nbsp; They are craning their necks, looking at us curiously and wondering who or what we are.&nbsp; They followed us like this for a while before they all dove and took off, no doubt to find another wave to nap on.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200520-018-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200520-018-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200520-018-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200520-018-HR-Edit\" width=\"1028\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">After the sea lions, we needed a break so we stopped in at this outer coast beach.&nbsp; It was a beautiful spot and there was a nice stream at one end but the weather was far too cool for bathing!<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200521-015-HR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200521-015-HR\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200521-015-HR_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200521-015-HR\" width=\"1027\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Morning light in an anchorage.&nbsp; Forest right down to the high tide line, and jewel green seaweed.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200521-030-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200521-030-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200521-030-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200521-030-HR-Edit\" width=\"1027\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Another beautiful river estuary with no visible bears (were they all napping?) but instead this group of elegant Sandhill Cranes.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200521-061-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200521-061-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200521-061-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200521-061-HR-Edit\" width=\"643\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">We passed by Namu for a look on the way by.&nbsp; The abandoned cannery, formerly a vibrant community, continues to crumble into the ground.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200521-051-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200521-051-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200521-051-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200521-051-HR-Edit\" width=\"643\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200522-004-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; This will feed us for several days.&nbsp; Fresh halibut is the best thing going!<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200523-010-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200523-010-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200523-010-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200523-010-HR-Edit\" width=\"580\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Crabs like fresh halibut too!&nbsp; Using the halibut carcass as bait, we pulled in a record 38 crabs.&nbsp; Unfortunately, none of them were big enough to keep.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200523-005-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200523-005-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200523-005-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200523-005-HR-Edit\" width=\"1028\" height=\"496\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">We pass by the Native village of Bella Bella, which is currently closed to visitors.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200523-013-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200523-013-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/20200523-013-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200523-013-HR-Edit\" width=\"1028\" height=\"376\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Raven Song at the far end of the dock at Shearwater, where we have stopped for a day for re-supply.&nbsp; When we were last here, two years ago, Raven Song was dwarfed by the large cruisers that filled the dock.&nbsp; Now, there is very little going on here.&nbsp; We had to phone in our grocery order and it was delivered to the dock.&nbsp; The laundry is open, which is a good thing, and we had take-out burgers from the pub for lunch.&nbsp; Tomorrow we will head back out, continuing slowly up the coast for more cruising adventures.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/?page_id=1427\">Back to the previous section.&nbsp;<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
