&#8220;A Change of Climate&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\">Our last blog entry ended with us re-supplying at Shearwater Marine Center.\u00a0 From there we continued south.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">This summer has been unusually cool and wet, and also stormy on the mid-coast.\u00a0 While we had toyed with the idea of spending the whole summer on the mid-coast, the cold and rain were starting to get us down.\u00a0 So we continued southbound, our pace gradually quickening in search of sunnier climes.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/5th-leg-overview.jpg.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200706-023-HR-2-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"1028\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">On the day before we arrived in Shearwater, we felt that the weather was nice enough to have our cocktails on the top deck.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200708-001-HR-2-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200708-001-HR-2-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200708-001-HR-2-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200708-001-HR-2-Edit\" width=\"1028\" height=\"572\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">After a quick re-supply stop, here we are leaving Shearwater on a more typical mid-coast day.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200708-018-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200708-018-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200708-018-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200708-018-HR-Edit\" width=\"1027\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">View from our anchorage the next morning, as the weather tries to decide what to do.\u00a0 It turned out to be a rather pleasant, cloudy day.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200709-015-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200709-015-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200709-015-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200709-015-HR-Edit\" width=\"1028\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">We stopped for a paddle at the north end of Calvert Island.\u00a0 This is becoming one of our favourite places to paddle, with lots of interesting little islands and beautiful rocks.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200709-028-HR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200710-025-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200710-025-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200710-025-HR-Edit\" width=\"1027\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">We hunkered down for another storm in front of the Hakai Research Institute near the north end of Calvert Island.\u00a0 This will be our 9th storm in the 11 weeks that we have been out on this trip.\u00a0 In contrast, on our 2018 trip to Glacier Bay, we had only 5 storms in the entire 5 month trip.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">The Hakai Institute is a favourite stop.\u00a0 They have satellite wifi that you can pick up on your boat anchored in the bay.\u00a0 (Check out their website hakai.org).\u00a0 Also, there are trails to outer coast beaches.\u00a0 Unfortunately, as this area is still within the bounds of the Heiltsuk traditional territories, they have closed all the trails so we can\u2019t go ashore.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200711-016-HR-2-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200711-041-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200711-041-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200711-041-HR-Edit\" width=\"1027\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">After a day of sitting around, the storm abated the next day.\u00a0 We are under way again at the beginning of a long day heading south, with low clouds and showers, but little wind.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200711-033-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200711-033-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200711-033-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200711-033-HR-Edit\" width=\"1027\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">We pass the Alaska Ferry later that morning.\u00a0 There is a lot less traffic on the Inside Passage route this year with the absence of the cruise ships and most of the large American yachts.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200711-056-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200711-056-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200711-056-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200711-056-HR-Edit\" width=\"1027\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Cape Caution, with it\u2019s diminutive light tower. Cape Caution is the dividing line between the mid-coast and the south coast.\u00a0 Not only can it be a rough stretch of cruising, but rounding the Cape in either direction represents a significant change of environment, population, and availability of supplies.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Rounding Cape Caution, I noted that the weather (low cloud and drizzle) and the temperature (13 degrees) are exactly the same when we rounded Cape Caution northbound on May 17th.\u00a0 Today is July 11th, almost two months later.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200711-027-HR-2-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200711-027-HR-2-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200711-027-HR-2-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200711-027-HR-2-Edit\" width=\"1028\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">At the end of the day, the welcome sight of the windswept entrance to Miles Inlet on Bramham Island, one of our favourite anchorages.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200711-029-HR-2-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200711-029-HR-2-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200711-029-HR-2-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200711-029-HR-2-Edit\" width=\"560\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Inside the anchorage the water is so calm that rock totems abound.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200712-079-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200712-079-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200712-079-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200712-079-HR-Edit\" width=\"1027\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Exhausted after 10 hours of open ocean cruising, we tumble into bed to the sounds of a soft drizzle.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200712-039-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200712-039-HR-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200712-039-HR-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200712-039-HR-Edit\" width=\"1028\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Another fairly long day is ahead of us on our way to Port McNeill, but we break it up with a stop for a paddle at the Deserters Group of islands.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200712-055-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"20200714-017-HR-2-Edit\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200714-017-HR-2-Edit_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"20200714-017-HR-2-Edit\" width=\"1028\" height=\"772\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">We visited the abandoned Native village of Karlukwees.\u00a0 People were living here until the 1960\u2019s but now there are just a few ruins disappearing into the woods.\u00a0 Plus some feral apple trees, currant bushes and lots of thimbleberries.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20160820-328-HR-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline;
