We just set out and felt we would figure it out along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Here is a collection of photos of the trip to date &#8211; from Vancouver to Port Hardy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But first, below is a Google map of our route. Barb generously provides us with a profusion of fresh, organic greens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-06-24-1159-21-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2807\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">On our way up Jervis inlet, we stop to admire ancient Native  pictographs on the vertical shores. We anchored just a few feet off the shore at Vancouver Bay. It was hot, and completely calm. This is early morning in the Octopus Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-01-0818-76-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2822\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">At Stuart Island, eagles are fishing in the tidal rapids.  They are fishing for hake &#8211; small white fish which get boiled up to the surface in the rapids.  Hundreds of eagles would show up every time the rapids ran hard.  In addition to the eagles in the air, there are dozens sitting in the trees, waiting their turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-02-1124-103-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2844\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">An eagle picks up a meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-01-1203-74-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2824\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">From Stuart Island, we ventured up Bute inlet. This was right after the heat wave we had in June and all the rivers were high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-01-1342-74-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2825\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">A glimpse of a small part of the Homathko ice field at the head of Bute inlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-01-2026-80-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2829\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">We anchored off the mouth of the Southgate river at the head of the inlet.  The Southgate had experienced a large landslide during the winter, and was now sending down a steady stream of trees.  Every few minutes another whole tree would come drifting by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery alignwide columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-6 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-01-2107-17-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"2846\" class=\"wp-image-2846\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-01-2104-11-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"2848\" data-full-url=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-01-2104-11-HR_DxO.jpg\" data-link=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/?attachment_id=2848\" class=\"wp-image-2848\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Drift logs were all around us, and I tried to push off the ones bumping into the hull or rubbing up against the anchor chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-02-1055-83-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2849\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">We had a rather rough night up at the head of Bute inlet.  We wanted to explore the Homathko river but all the rivers were running high and it was too hazardous.  So the next morning we got up early and cruised back down the inlet before the afternoon wind came up.  Here we are bucking the current and dodging a drift tree in the Arran rapids on our way back to Stuart island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-03-1109-18-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2850\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Eagle in the grass at Eagle lake on Stuart island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-04-1205-16-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2851\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Back out in Georgia Strait, we stopped at the south end of Quadra island to look for petroglyphs.  Apparently there are quite a number of petroglyphs carved on beach boulders.  There are many boulders, however, and finding any carvings was a real challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-04-1233-19-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2852\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">After some searching, Jan managed to find a petroglyph.  It was very faint, however.  Almost impossible to see, Jan outlined the carving with chalk, tracing the figure by feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-04-1324-37-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2853\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The Cape Mudge lighthouse on Quadra island. The entry to the basin is a reversing tidal stream, and was blocked by fallen trees.  We portaged the kayaks around the trees and some rapids, then negotiated the log jam at the Basin itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery class=\"has-text-align-center\">Heading up Johnstone Strait, we encounter for the first time the marine cloud that tells us we are nearing the outer coast.  No more t-shirts for us &#8211; it&#8217;s time to break out the sweaters!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-12-0924-14-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2886\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">In Port Harvey, just off Johnstone Strait, we came across this barge construction facility. There are a number of these little marinas in the Broughtons, serving the visiting cruisers. It&#8217;s only good if the wind is calm, or from the east. Jan started in on her Sea Asparagus pickling project.  When Jan is deep into a project like this, its a good omen for fishing. Sadly, it was not to be&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-19-1503-123-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2935\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Sullivan Bay, being owned by Americans, caters mostly to Americans.  As the border was still closed, so was Sullivan Bay.  The restaurant was closed, there was no Happy Hour, and the store&#8217;s shelves were pretty bare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-19-1825-137-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2936\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Here we had the first rain on this trip.  We had been away almost a month, with sunshine every day.  Quite a change from the previous summer!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-21-0804-146-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2937\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The sun came out again the next day as we pass one of the many fish farms in this part of the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-21-1041-150-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2938\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">We had a very calm crossing of Queen Charlotte Strait, on our way over to Port Hardy.  So calm that we left the driving to Betty while we worked on other projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-21-1543-04-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2939\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">First stop in Port Hardy was the fuel dock, where we vied for space with the fish farm supply boats and numerous sport fishing boats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery alignwide columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-21 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-22-0900-14-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"2940\" class=\"wp-image-2940\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-22-1039-17-HR_DxO.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"2941\" data-full-url=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-22-1039-17-HR_DxO.jpg\" data-link=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/?attachment_id=2941\" class=\"wp-image-2941\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">At the docks in Port Hardy, and out on our bikes fulfilling our shopping lists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">We stopped here for a couple of days getting ready for the next leg.  Our plan now is to go around Vancouver Island, so the next grocery shopping opportunity won&#8217;t be until Tofino, which we expect to take 3 or 4 weeks.  The weather has changed &#8211; it was pouring rain when we arrived here.
