Here, our bikes are parked in front of Coho Joe&#8217;s, where we are enjoying lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-06-141235-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3342\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Our final stop was in Port Hardy. The food is so rich here that one of the whales simply opens it&#8217;s mouth at the surface, hangs there for a minute, and then gulps it all in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-08-110435-HR-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3352\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Gulp!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">We watched this behaviour, which was new to us, being repeated over and over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-08-121840-HR-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3353\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The view from our anchorage in Bull Harbour on Hope Island.  This is our last stop before heading around the north tip of Vancouver Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-09-055952-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3354\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The same view early the next morning.  We are pleased to wake to a lovely calm day which means a smooth trip up around Cape Scott.  Floating in the water in the foreground is a Sea Otter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-09-083256-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3355\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Looking back toward Hope Island as we enjoy a smooth cruise to Cape Scott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-09-101841-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3356\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Jan starts in on a knitting project.  In the distance are the Scott Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-09-124032-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3358\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Raven Song anchored in Guise Bay, just south of Cape Scott.  We took the kayaks out for a short paddle and later went ashore to explore the grassy sand dunes in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-09-130412-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3359\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Walking over the grassy dunes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-09-131131-JC.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3360\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Wildflowers abound among the grasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-09-131501-JC.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3361\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Hardy plants grace the sand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-09-132752-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3362\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Jan finds some ripe wild strawberries.  They are tiny but are the tastiest strawberries ever!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-10-064017-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3363\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Our first anchorage on the west coast is Sea Otter Cove &#8211; very peaceful when we arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-10-133354-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3364\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">We went for a paddle and spotted this small black bear on the shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-10-143347-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3365\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">A knarled tree skeleton stands sentinel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-10-154409-JC-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3366\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Yes, that&#8217;s me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-11-075819-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3367\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The next day we were greeted with a storm.  The wind blew 50kmh all day.  Those orange things are mooring buoys, intended for these sorts of situations.  But we find anchoring to be more comfortable.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-11-145833-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3368\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Jan takes advantage of our storm day to finish the re-upholstering of our cushions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-12-093335-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3369\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">On the move again after the storm passes, we pass the Quatsino lighthouse on our way in to Winter Harbour.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025-07-12-135054-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3371\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Winter harbour is a ramshackle end-of-the-road kind of place.  The main activity here, as in all the places on the outer coast, is sport fishing.  There is a store, which has a lot of fishing tackle and baseball caps.  I did buy a couple of frozen steaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025-07-13-150707-JC.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3372\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Leaving Winter Harbour, we anchor in a small cove and go for a paddle along the rugged shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025-07-13-143207-JC.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3374\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">We are always amazed at the power of the water as the swells surge over the rocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG_9730.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3420\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">In the morning calm I stick my head out the window to listen for bird sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025-07-14-085757-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3375\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The next day we are on the move again.  Strong northwest winds are forecast for the next several days and we are on our way to get around the Brooks Peninsula before then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025-07-14-085834-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3376\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">It was a rough day for us.  The wind had already started and we got tossed around in the swells and waves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG_9752.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3422\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025-07-14-100509-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3377\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Rounding the treeless and rugged Solander Island at the end of the Brooks Peninsula.  This is often the windiest spot on the Vancouver Island coast, and today was no exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025-07-14-100728-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3378\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The sun begins to break out as we leave Solander Island astern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025-07-14-181553-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3380\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Anchored now on the south side of the Brooks Peninsula, we can see the fog getting blown over the top of the mountains by the strengthening northwest winds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025-07-15-155108-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3381\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Windy days from the northwest mean sunshine.  We take the kayaks to explore the Nasparti River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025-07-15-160810-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3382\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">We had a quick dip.  Very quick, as the water was fresh and cold!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025-07-15-122350-HR_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3383\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Paddling back to the boat I put the camera in the water to take photos of a large Lions Mane Jelly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025-07-22-104416-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3393\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Jan collects kelp for a kelp basket project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025-07-17-082913-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3384\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Hummingbirds found the boat attractive and frequently flew by.  One of them even flew inside and had to be rescued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025-07-21-093434-HR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3395\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Anchored in a secret spot among a constellation of rocky islets near the Acous Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/riffelages.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2025-07-20-143329-JC.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3396\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Paddling around the archipelago, I investigate this dramatic sea arch. No longer are we all alone in the wilderness.  Now we are surrounded by people, energetic activity, and jaded tour operators.  And a phone signal.
